San Francisco: The Unknown City

A quirky SF guidebook geared towards locals with tons of trivia and
tons of great suggestions of new ways to explore the city.

Published by Arsenal Pulp Press - $17.95

Arsenal's "Unknown City" series of alternative guidebooks designed
for tourists and hometowners alike turns its attention to the City by
the Bay: San Francisco, where stories of notorious murders, city hall
scandals, and untold tales of Chinatown, Haight-Ashbury, and Castro
Street share pages with secret dining pleasures, shopping meccas, and
nightclub hotspots. From pot dispensaries in the Lower Haight to the
nightspots in the Mission to private karaoke rooms in Japan Town, all
of San Francisco's hidden nooks and crannies are exposed. Johnny has
fallen in love with this guidebook, which has become the source of
endless San Francisco trivia questions around the office. Note to the
winner: you must be able to pick up the book at the funcheap

day during normal business hours.

$100 Laptop

I love the $100 laptop, I think it's a great idea and seeing the pictures today on Flickr I think it looks pretty cool too. I read about it in Utne magazine several months ago and have been meaning to post about it here. Thanks to Josh, who sent me a link to Slashdot.com, this morning, I'm finally sharing the news with you:

MITs $100 laptop was unveiled at the Seven Countries Task Force Meeting. It runs a special version of the Fedora linux and it comes with native wireless lan support. You can see the photo album, and you can pledge to buy one at triple price... in order to donate 2 of them to children.

What's new: Portland, Powell's, and The Skinny magazine

We, Josh and Helene, just got back from Portland, OR. My sister (Helene's) graduated from art school this weekend and my parents, Josh and I all met up there to go to the ceremony and spend some time with her. We were all staying in a great hotel (thanks Priceline for getting us an awesome price) at Lloyd Center.

Because Portland recently added Lloyd Center to their "Fareless Square" area, we were able to take full advantage of the MAX (the tram) for free! We sampled many restaurants so I'll be sure to share all the details as I settle back in to San Francisco life.

While in Portland, we paid a visit to one of our favorite independent bookstore, Powell's, and were happy to see that copies of our book, San Francisco: The Unknown City were on display. We offered to sign the copies so the books now have a nice yellow sticker that reads "Autographed."

Talking about independent bookstores, I recently wrote an article on big indie bookstores in the Bay Area (mainly Kepler's, Cody's and City Lights) for The Skinny magazine. The summer issue, which includes my story, is now available. It's free and it's a great read if you're interested in cool places/stuff to do/people in San Francisco so be sure to check it out.

Going to New York

I've had to stay away from the blog for a while because of too much work so I haven't even had the chance to share with you that I'm going to New York City. It will only for a few days but I'm very excited since it's only the second time I'll be there. While I have no definite plans on what I want to see, I'm looking forward to a food tour of the city a friend of mine is taking me on... I'll report back.

I'm open to suggestions if there's anything I shouldn't miss while I'm there. I did most of the tourist spots last time I was there (except for the Empire State Building which I'm hoping to see this time) but would love to hear what you would recommend.

Next destination is Portland (shortly after I get back from New York)!
