If you're in the Bay Area in October...
We'll be reading from our book and talking about what it was like to wrestle with the mass of unknown stories in this city to get the best of the best and then fit them into 240 pages.
The talk will be at Kepler's in Menlo Park, one of the coolest independent bookstores in Northern California. We don't have an exact date yet, but it will be either early or mid-October. Stay tuned!
You can check out the book here: San Francisco: The Unknown City

Gone Tribe Travelin'
Most budget travelers are happy to find a good cause to help out with. If the good cause involves traveling, well so much the better. Right?
If you agree then you'll probably like the sound of this: a global tribe will soon develop a sustainable eco-community on an island in Fiji and they want you to join them. TribeWanted, a UK company that launched last week, is looking for 5,000 people to be part of this Reality-TV-like project.

What's it going to cost you? Not that much actually. There are three membership levels to choose from:
- Nomads get a one-year membership and seven nights on the island for USD 210;
- Hunters get a two-year membership and can stay for 14 nights for USD 420;
- and Warriors are member for three years and can stay for 21 nights for USD 630.
Springwise.com explains "When the 5000th member joins, the tribe will be formed and will start to make tribal decisions by voting through the online community at tribewanted.com, on issues such as the name of the tribe, type of infrastructure that will be required, and how to build an island community in an environmentally friendly way."

Love Travel
This month, the EasyJet in flight newsletter includes a cute article. The story profiles people from all over Europe that met while traveling, or living abroad and how they ended up together despite the difficulties of long distance relationships.
Dom Philips writes "They say travel broadens the mind. It can also broaden the love life. And of course there’s the buzz of flinging yourself into the unknown."

Dental Tourist
The San Francisco Chronicle published a very interesting story about people choosing to travel overseas for dental care. Victoria Colliver writes "A growing number of countries, including India, Thailand and Singapore, are marketing medical and dental services to foreigners, boasting of "first world medicine" at cut-rate prices."
Jim Paggi, a 56-year-old Benicia man, went more than 6,000 miles to Hungary in March to get his teeth fixed for less than a third of the $50,000 or more it would have cost in this country.

Interview with Amanda Jones on Rolfpotts.com
Rolf Potts recently interviewed Amanda Jones, a traveler writer and photographer I really like. Jones writes for Vogue, Travel & Leisure, Town & Country, Islands, Brides, Food & Wine, Condé Nast Traveller, the London Sunday Times, the Los Angeles Times, and the San Francisco Chronicle. She has also been published in travel anthologies such as Salon.com’s Wanderlust: Real-Life Tales of Adventure and Romance, and Lonely Planet’s "The Kindness of Strangers" and "By The Seat of My Pants."
Potts asked Jones what advice and/or warnings she would give to someone interested in going into travel writing. Here are some of her answers:
"Marry or move in with someone who understands your life, your passions, your addiction to travel. Perhaps someone who likes to travel too.
You will not make a fortune doing this.
The beauty of this business is there is no barrier to entry. You can have a degree in journalism from Columbia and editors won’t give a damn. You can be fresh out of the local community college and if you can write well, you’ll get your stories published. This is the ultimate meritocracy. You’re good, you get work."
