The Propeller Island City Lodge in Berlin
Most budget travelers only care about finding a clean bed, shower and toilet while traveling but once in a while it is fun to stay in classy/artsy hotel.
The PROPELLER ISLAND CITY LODGE in Berlin is a destination in itself. The hotel has 30 rooms, all crazier-looking than the other. Here is the description on their website:

"All rooms and objects were created by the German artist Lars Stroschen. Much more appropriate than "hotel" is the designation "living in a work of art".
30 rooms with an absolutely unique and personal ambience. "Unique" is meant literally, for the entirety of all furnishings and other objects you will discover here are custom-made, individual handiwork. None can be found anywhere else on this planet - one could consider the CITY LODGE to be a MUSEUM with guest accomodations or a stay-in work of SCULPTURE.
We wish you an inspiring stay in our exciting visionsmachine!"

Cameron Diaz Goes Backpacking
MTV is launching a travel show called "Trippin'" in which "Cameron Diaz and a group of her close, personal friends think globally and act globally too as they travel to unlikely getaways...from Chile to Yellowstone, on a quest to safeguard the environment. No Hotel, no Pilates instructors...they will pack their own bags and carry them into the wild."
Kid Rock learns the importance of clean waterways (according to an article in USA Today, he recently realized that one needs water to make beer--he's since become very concerned about keeping the Rocky Mountains clean), Drew Barrymore recounts romantic sunsets in the woods and other celebrity friends fly around the world.

Helping Each Other Out
Chrissy is going to Japan for the first time soon and wants your suggestions on where to go, what to do, and where to stay. She posted the following in our forums:
Japan!!
« on: Mar 18th, 2005, 3:59pm »
I'm going to be in Japan from April 28th to June 8th. I'm flying in and out of Nagoya but will be staying in Gotemba for most of my time there. I am open to all recommendations but am probably going to visit western Honshu (Osaka, Kyoto...)area as well as Tokyo. I'm looking for the closest thing to budget as possible. I'm especially interested on info about camping possibilities and vegetarian food options!
I'm sure some of you have great things to recommend so help her out by posting here

A Native, Turned Tourist, in Turkey
Here is a story I enjoyed in the San Francisco Chronicle, about a girl born in Turkey but raised in the United States, who decides to go back to the "motherland" and realizes that she has become a tourist in her own country.
"Frustration began to overwhelm me: How had I neglected to ask actual Turks (i.e., my father) about what to do when we actually got to Istanbul? What did I think would happen, some kind of internal sixth Turkish sense would lead me to hidden back alleys and secret bars where the young, cool kids go? I get lost on Muni regularly; at the very least, we needed a map."

The Life of A Foreign Sumo
It may not be the easiest way to get a free ticket to Japan, but if you like Sumo wrestling and you're willing to sleep and eat a lot, you could be the next Gaijin (foreign) Sumo wrestler.
"Sumo wrestler Baruto, aka 20-year-old Kaido Hoovelson, was encouraged to come to Japan by his judo coach, who described the life of a wrestler as "a lot of sleeping, a lot of eating, a little bit of training. But for the past three years, Baruto's life has been characterized by 'a lot of cleaning, a lot of training, a little bit of sleeping.'"

Around the World, A New Record
Thank you to all the people that made it to our Travelers Happy Hour last week in San Francisco. It was great meeting some and seeing others again! We're working on the March issue and will have the winning photos up soon.
We always love to hear when people try new things, so here's a first we thought was cool.

"First by balloon, now by plane, Steve Fossett is once again a 'round-the-world record holder.
The millionaire adventurer on Thursday became the first person to fly around the world alone without stopping or refueling, touching down in central Kansas after a 67-hour, 23,000-mile journey that appeared endangered at times by a troubled fuel system."
